Combining police education & training

Way back in the day, police higher education was a blend of academic and practical subjects. Then, in the 1960s and 1970s, police training was established in separate institutions in all 50 states, and police higher education morphed into the discipline of criminal justice and became predominantly academic. Today, we are seeing some evidence of a trend back toward a blended approach. This Community Policing Dispatch article describes a 4-year degree program at Thomas College in Maine that incorporates an 18-week police academy as one of its semesters. Interestingly, this kind of blended education/training model has been used in New South Wales, Australia since 1998 and has been recommended for the UK.
