Grass-roots community policing in Mexico

This article describes the situation in Cheran, Mexico, where residents threw out the police and took up arms against drug cartels and illegal loggers who have decimated their forest. Several other indigenous communities have taken similar actions and have a degree of official legitimacy under a “use and customs” clause in Mexican law.
