UK College of Policing Launched

The UK College of Policing has officially begun operation. It is described as “the new professional body for the police service” in the UK with “a powerful remit to set standards for the police service on training, development, skills and qualifications.” In turbulent times, a key objective of the College is to sustain and enhance the British model of policing by consent. It will be interesting to watch the development of this new institution.

This certainly bears watching. I remember my first visit to Bramshill in late 60s. As many of us know, we have often talked about such a venture in the U.S. but have never been able to get it beyond the FBI National Academy and a few college efforts (Harvard, et al). What is truly needed for us is an active collaboration between academics and practitioners in a rigorous setting and some kind of professional consensus as to what constitutes excellence in policing.
