Police & mentally ill persons

A new study from the National Sheriffs’ Association and the Treatment Advocacy Center reports that the overall number of justifiable homicides by police in the U.S. has gradually decreased since 1980, but the number of those that result from a person attacking a police officer has actually increased. The report argues that this increase is largely driven by fatal encounters with persons suffering mental illness crises, and blames the increase in such encounters on failures in the nation’s mental health care system.
