Modernizing crime statistics

A new National Research Council panel with a mandate to “assess and make recommendations for the development of a modern set of crime measures in the United States” will hold its first meeting this week. The blue-ribbon effort is sponsored jointly by the two institutions that currently collect and release national crime statistics each year — the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
