LASER in Los Angeles

This article describes the LASER predictive policing program in the LAPD — “part data collection, part lightning-fast computer platform, part street-level intelligence-gathering.” The strategy, which mainly targets hot spots and chronic violent offenders, is credited with significant homicide reduction in the Newton district since 2011, but civil liberties and privacy advocates question whether it amounts to excessive or even illegal domestic spying.
