Police pursuits — 10,000 deaths since 1979

The dangerous nature of police pursuits is well known. This article reports over 10,000 pursuit-related deaths since 1979, nearly half of whom were bystanders or passengers.

    I’m not an advocate of unrestricted pursuit policies.
    In my PD, we require supervisors to closely monitor pursuits for policy compliance. And when I’ve reviewed directives for other agencies, I’ve almost always suggested more restrictive provisions.
    However, I also believe we should place more responsibility for these negative outcomes on the fleeing motorists who cause them.
