Unfair lineups

A new study indicates that photo lineups in which only one person has the suspect’s distinctive feature (e.g. a beard or glasses) are more likely to result in false identifications by witnesses. Digital alteration, such as hiding part of the faces or adding features to faces, reduced the likelihood of false identification.

    Police must admit that detection of unknown offenders is fraught with mistakes, and that insisting on detection of all such cases will result in police deviance like fabrication of evidence, extortion of confession, – the limitations of policing need to be acknowledged.
