SWAT mission creep

While police militarization and the expansion of police paramilitary units were controversial topics before Ferguson, they have gotten even more attention since. This article (with a trailer) describes the award-winning new documentary Do Not Resist. The filmmaker’s father was a SWAT commander in Michigan in the days before the use of such units in search warrant cases became more frequent.

    The article raises several good points, particularity those relating to asset forfeiture and “policing for profit.”
    However, I’m not sure about a blanket assertion that “warrior culture…divides law enforcement from the public they’re sworn to serve.” While the warrior mode shouldn’t be the default, I agree with Chuck Ramsey’s contention that we need cops with the guardian’s mindset and the warrior’s heart.
