$6.5 billion FirstNet contract awarded

The U.S. Commerce Department has selected AT&T to build a new nationwide broadband network specifically for public safety, according to this press release. The company will get $6.5 billion from the contract and will spend an additional $40 billion. The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) was chartered in 2012 “to ensure the building, deployment, and operation of the nationwide, broadband network that equips first responders to save lives and protect U.S. communities.”
